EarlySight

EarlySight is an EPFL spin-off founded by a team of 4 with backgrounds in Optoelectronics, Ophthalmology, and Microengineering. Their research project that started in 2016 at co-founder Prof. Moser’s EPFL lab has developed into a machine called Cellularis. It combines lateral illumination of the eye with adaptive optics, a method commonly used in astronomy to provide incredibly detailed pictures of the retina. With a single-cell resolution, this non-invasive approach is much more precise than the alternatives in detecting early signs of disease. The machine has already been shown to very clearly detect macular degenerescence at the single-cell level.
